E10023640 Srednja skola Dalj Croatia

Srednja škola Dalj (engl.Secondary school Dalj) is a secondary vocational school in East Croatia, Osječko-baranjska County, Municipality Erdut which includes four villages: Dalj, Bijelo Brdo, Erdut and Aljmaš. It is the only rural secondary school in this part of the country. It is a state school, financed and governed by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports. The school was founded in 1993. The school’s main scope of work is economy and agriculture, providing education for 3 vocational profiles: economist, agriculturer and agro technician. The two main scopes of work are in close correlation

and form an interdisciplinary curriculum based on the principle learning by doing. This idea is best implemented through activities in the school’s student’s cooperative. The cooperative DALYA was founded in 2007 as has so far 10 sections: strawberry greenhouse, orchard, vegetable gardens, wine cellar, hotbeds, ethno tourism, beekeeping, accountancy and bookkeeping, marketing. The cooperative is an integral part of the school’s curriculum and blends theory and practice, offering opportunities for innovative teaching and learning methods. The mission and vision of the cooperative is to teach

students how to become good entrepreneurs, how to develop their idea into a startup. Student’s cooperative is not a compulsory subject; however most of the students choose to be a member of it. At the beginning of every school year students send their CV’s and motivation letters and apply for various positions, i.e. manager positions in various sections of the cooperative. Every applicant is than asked to a job interview, led by board of teachers. Once chosen, the students take up the role of the manager and are assigned to make their business, financial and work plan for their section in cooperation

with their teacher mentors. Some of the most important skills students learn through this extracurricular activity are decision making, responsibility, team work, tolerance, moral and business ethics and entrepreneurial skills. The same teaching strategies are implemented through trainee companies. These are also integral part of the school’s curriculum and are compulsory subject for all students of economy. Similar to the student’s cooperative, companies have several offices, e.g.

accountancy, administration, marketing, procuration of goods. The name and the main scope of work is chosen by the students as well. These activities are a good example of how to teach the skills which none book can do – how to connect knowledge and practical skills.
